Firebird Rant

Since I got my ADSL at home, I’ve occasionally downloaded CD images. I’ve come to accept that every browser that I’ve tried saves a temporary file to drive C then copies it to D: (where I saved the file in the first place) once it has downloaded.

So why on earth does Mozilla Firebird save not one but TWO temp files to C: while the file is downloading??? WHY do I need 1.5Gb free on my C: drive, to download a 700Mb file to my D: drive??? This just sucks! Repeat after me, C: is for programs, D: is for data.

On an additional note, why don’t ANY of the browsers check to see if there is enough free space on drive C: for the temp file BEFORE they start downloading the entire file? If you MUST save it to my C: drive first, TELL me if I don’t have enough space BEFORE I run out, not after. Don’t let me find out when I wake up in the morning that my 700Mb download failed with 150Mb to go, tell me NOW, BEFORE it gets fully underway that it will fail (you (the browser) know it will, because I don’t have enough disk space). In fact, why not just dump the temp file on the D: drive? I told it to save the fle there, there is enough space there, stop using my C: drive!

Firebird rocks, just don’t use it for large files. Nuff said.
