XP Security Update Causes problems

A couple of weeks ago, my boss started complaining that his machine started to run very slowly after installing a security patch pushed on him by Windows Update. A day or so later my machine did the same. Now that I’ve put up with this for a cople of weeks, I find that Microsoft have acknowledged this to be a problem with the patch, as Ed Bott explains

Every so often, one of these Critical Updates turns out to cause additional headaches. That’s the case with Critical Update 811493, which fixes a nasty security bug that could allow someone to take over a computer running Windows XP. Unfortunately, this fix doesn’t play well with some antivirus programs on computers that also have Windows XP Service Pack 1 installed, as Microsoft acknowledged in a brand-new Knowledge Base article: 819634 - You May Experience Performance Issues After You Install the 811493 (MS03-013) Package on Your Windows XP SP1-Based Computer.

The MSKB article also suggests two workarounds, and offers an explanation…

You may experience slower computer performance after you install the 811493 (MS03-013) security update package on a computer that is running Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1), or after you upgrade to SP1 on a Windows XP-based computer on which the 811493 security update was previously installed. This problem may be more likely to occur if you use some features of some third-party programs, such as antivirus programs. For example, this problem may occur if your antivirus program is configured to scan all files when you open (or you run) them. This is sometimes called “real-time” scanning.

Microsoft also suggests installing the “new and improved” (supposedly fixed) 811493 package… Don’t do it!
This patch is suggested for Windows XP and Windows 2000 SP3 and SP4. I have Windows 2000 Pro (SP4) and installed it as Microsoft suggested.
Well, I didn’t get a chance to experience the slow-down that has affected Win XP users, because with Win2K, the patch corrupts the “GINA” (msgina.dll, winlogon.exe) and several other components of the logon security system. When you re-boot after installation, you’re stopped cold with an error statement: “User Interface Failure - Logon User Interface DLL ‘MSGINA.DLL’ failed to load. System Administrator must replace or restore this … bla, bla, bla…”, then taken back to re-boot, where the process would be repeated!
Although I finally managed to replace the “msgina.dll” through the Admin Repair Console and removed the patch, my system is now plagued with many bugs and errors. At every boot, “Windows File Protection” (WFP) would disable any additional activity for 20 to 30 minutes, while it “scanned” my system. Constant error messages of “Corrupted Files or Folders” were displayed during WFP’s scan, so I had to disable WFP through the registry, which is no small feat! (debugger has to be attached to the Windows Kernel.)
Anyway, I wish I had never heard of the Q811493 security patch! And if anybody has not installed it, do yourself a huge favor and DON’T!!!

After installing MS Service Pak 1 for XP I am unable to log on to my computer at all. Tried going thru Safe Mode and that doesn’t work. I get this message with everything I try. winlogon.exe. Entry point not found. The procedure entry point associate is dangerous could not be located in the dll. SHLWAPI.dll.

Does anyone know what I need to do to fix this?
    Thanks

Problem: installing service pack 1 from windows update causes the computer to crash and some of your files get destroyed during the installation process, after booting the following error messages came up:

WinLogon.EXE - Entry point not found.
The procedure entry point AssocIsDangerous could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAPI.DLL

Click OK, then you get this one…

    User InterfaceFailure.
The logon UserInterFace DLL msgina.dll failed to load.
Contact admin ect…Replace DLL or restore original DLL.

if the previous message didn’t help you at all follow these simple steps. Warning: Before resintalling windows read the following warning on this site: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#warning1
failure to do so may damage your hard drive and your data could get lost.

    Solution:

to fix the problem without losing your most important data:—

you may repair windows xp by reinstalling main files. the way to do this is using your xp cd and when the chocies appear hit enter to install windows. “DO NOT TYPE R TO GO TO LOAD THE RECOVERY CONSOLE” you will then accept the agreement and then it will ask you
Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

windows will then erase and copy new files to the hard drive. the computer will later boot and when it asks you if you want to boot from the cd dont hit anything just let windows run and theN setup should keep working.

iF windows repair does not appear as one of your options check out : http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm#warning2
a complete technical explanation of what i just said is well explained on the site.
You should read all the WARNINGS.if this does not fix your problem then all there is left for you to do is a quick restore using your recovery disk.
however this should fix the problem my computer its running fine now but i believe i should back up all of my personal files now.
    good luck.
[Just for the record do not try and install any service packs no matter how new and improved microsoft says they are.. after all they will not really help you with your problem unless you got 300 dollars to help Gates get richer so anytime you see somthing like sp1 sp2 sp3 sp4 run away as fast as you can from it and dont ever look back :)]

i had the unfortunate discovery to find this update has messed up my sytem this morning.

I have a series pk1 OEM installation and have tried to use the recovery console from a XPpro disk.. unfortunatly it won’t accept the administrator password.
I have just established that is just a SP1 problem, so too bad.

Any suggestions for what i should do next?
How likely is it that if i try to reinstall this version that it kills all my personal documents.
I don’t care about the programs, its my photos and address book stuff that i’m concerened about.

    Hey,
same problem here, except that I just got the update from windowsupdate.com … I managed to make the system bootable using the “repair an exisitng installation”. However, I still have problems. While the DLLs etc. seem to be fixed, I can not login. The system accepts my old user/pw, but immediately logs me out again. Suggestions?

Hi. Thanks for the tip, changing the 4 files. I can now boot again and everything is well! Do You recommend, to uninstall the Q811493?

I got the boot-problem, when re-installing IE6-SP0. IE6SP1 (still) hangs, when making some clicks. It then looks the keyboard as well. I can only shut down. This is, why I tried to re-install IE6SP0, but with IE6SP0 I still have the sane problem. Can this be caused by one of the security patches of MS?

    Thanks for helping.

Thanks a million, I thought it was something I had done as I had just started to get another error “Failed to get data for ‘ad’”.
So while I was trying to fix this at one stage I had also downloaded all newest updates (Dope) and went to reset my system and I got the error “Winlogon.exe - Entry Point Not Found” and that is when I could not get into my system at all boy was I destraught about it all, but the copying of those files worked fantastic, I can at least get the rest of my backing up done then I will continue to either fix this other error which is stopping me from going onto the net (although I can still access email ok) but yeah not surfing) or I will REFORMATT and start all over again, BUT with a smile on my face as I was able to save my valuable data from my HDD thanks to you Ruben. Thanks a heap.

Thanks a bunch! My sister had the same problem, and we found this on the web, and did exactly what ruben said and now its back to normal. One thing I am not sure about is, what would happen if I delete the SP 1, would the same problem happen again (msgina missing) or what?

    Thanks Ruben and others advices!!!

I installed this patch on 2000 with no apparant problems, except that every day since it’s asked me to install it again (although it took a while for me to realise it was the same patch each time).

I’ve installed it a total of 15 times now and with success, according to windowsupdate.microsoft.com!

Other than that, no adverse affects… although I doubt it truly has installed successfully. Next time it pops up I’m going to try and get it to skip it.

I am having the problem right now. I tried ruben’s advice but I am stuck at the administrator password which I don’t know. My daughter’s pc is an Emachine T1840 with preinstalled WinXp. It was running fine till I installed updates and then I got this “msgina.dll” user interface errror. I am almost tempted to pop in the restore CD that came with it but she has important files in the hard drive. Still searching how to recover the password, or tool to recover the data files in the hard drive. Any help?

    Malaprop Says

It’s possible/probable that the administrator password was not set up. When it asks for the password don’t type anything just hit enter. If you get a message back basically saying the password is incorrect (I can’t remember the exact text)then there is a password, if you don’t get a message saying password incorrect then there is no password and you have moved on to the next stage. If there is a password then it must have been set up by your daughter or whoever set up the pc when it was first unpacked and set up.

xp Service pack 2 is full of bugs. Microsoft should pay for this bullshit code. My p.C was fine untill I installed it now it goes slow on start -up , closes internet explorer ramdomly displays error messages galore. like win 32 application must close etc , missing network icon.
Im considering dumping this operating system only doom3 wont play on win 98 sadly. MICROSOFT ARE MORONS.

What I do which works is have two hard drives and make sure one is good. Go buy the cheapest one you can find for a back up. Microsoft is so flaky, it is your only hope.

I made all kinds of rescue disks and none of them worked when the operating system is screwed up. In this case where Shlwapi.dll was a problem I coppied it from the dll cash but that didn’t work either, now I know there are other files involved as well, so maybe I can fix the new hard drive. At least with XP SP2, I was able to get windows commander up and running using Alt-Ctr-Del and from task manager selecting new task. I don’t use logon so that wasn’t a problem and if you don’t need it, I suggest you dump it.
